# Currencies and travel

Every space has a **base currency**, set when it’s created. All expenses are stored in it, so balances always add up.

*Amounts convert using the exchange rate for the expense’s date.*

Path: Settings > Localization

Each member can choose a different display currency in `Settings → Localization`, which is handy for trips abroad or family in other countries.

## Historical exchange rates

When you record an expense while travelling abroad (for example paying €45 for dinner when your space uses USD), Traxpend fetches the daily official exchange rate for that exact transaction date. This ensures fair splitting that is not skewed by subsequent currency fluctuations.
