# Budgets and alerts

> Set a monthly limit per category, see what is left as you spend, and get a warning before you go over.

*Alerts fire as spending crosses the threshold — 80% by default.*

1. **Open Budget**: Go to `Budget` in the sidebar.
2. **Set category limits**: Give categories like Groceries or Dining a monthly amount.
3. **Watch the month**: Each budget shows spent, remaining and percentage used, updating with every expense.

## How alerts work

- **A warning** when a category reaches its alert threshold — 80% unless you change it.
- **A second alert** when it goes over 100%.
- Alerts appear in your notifications and are emailed to the space, so the whole household sees them in time.

> **Tip:** Budgets are per month, so you can raise December’s for festivals without changing the rest of the year.

## Customizing alert thresholds

In addition to the standard 80% proactive warning, space admins can customize notification sensitivity for individual categories. For essential categories like Rent or Mortgage, you can silence early warnings, while keeping tight 75% alerts on discretionary spending such as Dining Out and Entertainment.

> **Budget Rollover:** Unspent budget from one month does not automatically roll over, giving your household a fresh, clean slate at the start of every billing cycle.
