Splitting bills 50/50 feels fair until one of you earns noticeably more. Then the lower earner can end up spending a much bigger slice of their pay on the same home. There is no single right answer, but there are three clear options, and the numbers make the choice easier.

## The example

Partner A takes home **1,20,000** a month and Partner B **80,000** (the same logic works for $6,000 and $4,000). Shared bills, including rent, groceries and utilities, come to **60,000**.

| Method | A pays | B pays | A's share of pay | B's share of pay | Left over: A | Left over: B |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 50/50 | 30,000 | 30,000 | 25% | 37.5% | 90,000 | 50,000 |
| By income (60/40) | 36,000 | 24,000 | 30% | 30% | 84,000 | 56,000 |
| Equal money left | 50,000 | 10,000 | 41.7% | 12.5% | 70,000 | 70,000 |

## 1. Split 50/50

Each partner pays half of every shared bill.

- **Works well when** incomes are similar, or you both want simple, separate finances.
- **Watch out for** the lower earner quietly cutting back on everything else to keep up.

## 2. Split in proportion to income

Each partner pays the same percentage of their pay. Here A earns 60 percent of the household income, so A pays 60 percent of shared bills. Both spend 30 percent of their pay on the home.

- **Works well when** incomes differ and you want each person to feel the same pinch.
- **Watch out for** forgetting to update the ratio when someone's pay changes. Review it every six months.

## 3. Equal money left over

The household pays the bills from combined income, and you split what is left equally. Here 2,00,000 minus 60,000 leaves 1,40,000, so each partner keeps 70,000.

- **Works well when** you think of yourselves as one financial team, often after marriage or with children.
- **Watch out for** it being a big ask for the higher earner unless you both agree with the principle.

## Other ways couples split

- **By category.** One pays rent, the other groceries and utilities. Simple, but it drifts out of balance as prices change.
- **A joint account.** Each partner transfers their share every month and all bills come out of one account.
- **One partner at home.** If one of you looks after children or the home full time, many couples pool income and treat that work as an equal contribution.

## How to choose

1. **Start with values, not maths.** Do you see your money as yours and mine, or ours?
2. **Run the numbers** for each method together.
3. **Pick one for six months**, then review.
4. **Keep personal spending personal.** Only shared costs go into the split.

## Make it automatic

Spreadsheets work if one of you enjoys them; our free [couples budget template](https://www.traxpend.com/templates/couples-budget-by-income) splits bills by income in Excel or Google Sheets. In [Traxpend for couples](https://www.traxpend.com/for/couples) you set the ratio once, say 60/40, every shared expense follows it, and at the end of the month you see the one payment that squares you up.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should couples split bills 50/50?

Only if incomes are similar or you both prefer it. When one partner earns much more, an income-based split keeps the burden equal.

### How do you split bills when one partner makes more?

Divide each partner's take-home pay by your combined income and use those percentages for shared bills.

### Should we use gross or take-home income?

Most couples use take-home pay, because that is what is actually available for bills.
