Rent is the biggest shared cost most of us have, and the one most likely to cause a quiet grudge. The good news: there are only a few sensible ways to split it, and each one is easy to calculate. Pick the one that matches your flat, agree it before anyone signs, and write it down.

## 1. Split rent equally

**Best when:** the rooms are roughly the same size and nobody has a private bathroom or balcony.

Divide the rent by the number of people. A ₹30,000 flat for three people is ₹10,000 each; a $2,400 apartment is $800 each. It is simple, and simplicity has real value.

## 2. Split rent by room size

**Best when:** bedrooms differ a lot in size.

Measure each bedroom, add the sizes up, and give each person a share of the rent in proportion to their room.

| Room | Size | Share | Rent (of 32,000) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Big room | 160 sq ft | 40% | 12,800 |
| Middle room | 140 sq ft | 35% | 11,200 |
| Small room | 100 sq ft | 25% | 8,000 |
| Total | 400 sq ft | 100% | 32,000 |

The catch: everyone uses the kitchen, living room and bathroom equally, so pure room-size splits can overcharge the person in the biggest room.

## 3. Shared space equally, bedrooms by size

**Best when:** you want the fairest version. This is the method most people settle on.

Decide what part of the rent pays for shared space, often 30 to 40 percent. Split that part equally, and split the rest by bedroom size.

With rent of 32,000, 30 percent for shared space and the same three rooms:

- Shared space: 9,600, so 3,200 each.
- Bedrooms: 22,400 split 40/35/25, so 8,960, 7,840 and 5,600.

| Room | Shared space | Bedroom | Total rent |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Big room | 3,200 | 8,960 | 12,160 |
| Middle room | 3,200 | 7,840 | 11,040 |
| Small room | 3,200 | 5,600 | 8,800 |
| Total | 9,600 | 22,400 | 32,000 |

Add a small premium for a private bathroom or balcony, for example by counting that room as 15 percent bigger. Our free [rent split calculator](https://www.traxpend.com/tools/rent-split) does this for you.

## 4. A couple sharing with a single person

**Best when:** a couple takes one bedroom and a single person takes another.

Splitting per room charges the couple too little for shared space they use twice as much; splitting per person charges them for a bedroom they share. The fair middle: split shared space **per person** and bedrooms **per room**.

Rent 30,000, shared space 40 percent, couple in the larger room (60 percent of bedroom space):

- Shared space: 12,000 split by three people, so 4,000 each. The couple pays 8,000 and the single 4,000.
- Bedrooms: 18,000 split 60/40, so the couple pays 10,800 and the single 7,200.
- **Totals: couple 18,800, single 11,200.** Together, 30,000.

## Splitting bills as well as rent

- **Wi‑Fi, streaming and cleaning supplies:** usually equal.
- **Electricity:** equal, unless one person runs an AC or heater all day; then agree a fixed top-up for that room.
- **Groceries:** shared staples equally; personal food stays personal.

## Make it stick

1. **Agree the method before move-in.** It is much harder to change later.
2. **Write it down** in a message everyone replies to, or a simple roommate agreement.
3. **Track shared costs in one place.** Our free [roommate expense tracker template](https://www.traxpend.com/templates/roommate-expense-tracker) works in Excel and Google Sheets, or use [Traxpend for flatmates](https://www.traxpend.com/for/flatmates) so rent and bills log themselves every month.
4. **Revisit when something changes:** someone moves out, or rent goes up.
